A commercial earthquake retrofit is a complex process. The specific retrofitting measures required for a building will depend on its individual characteristics. Certainly, specific requirements will vary depending on a building’s construction type, size, and location. There are some shared elements included in a commercial earthquake retrofit:
Structural Analysis: A thorough assessment of the building’s structural integrity is conducted to identify potential weaknesses and vulnerabilities to seismic forces.
Foundation Reinforcement: Inspection of the building’s foundation and if needed, measures to strengthen it will be completed to ensure it can withstand seismic loads. This could include adding reinforced concrete footings, deepening existing foundations, or installing additional piers or grade beams.
Anchorage and Fastening: This is a technique used in both commercial and residential buildings. Different building elements can be strengthened through connecting them to one another. This can include anchoring building components, such as fastening the foundation to the walls in a way that better resists lateral forces.
